Life before Gustavus
High school was quite an experience for me! I was a Peer Mediator, part of Link Crew, Cardinal Senate (student senate) and Senior Leaders, and served as Secretary and then President of National Honor Society. I swam during high school, was captain my senior year, and was fortunate enough to be part of a record setting relay my junior year. In addition to swimming, I ran track two years and played club soccer in the summers. My greatest accomplishment, however, was finishing out my four years as a straight-A student.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I came to Gustavus this fall after having spent a year at UW-Madison. I came here because I knew they would take care of me and that I wouldn’t feel so lost in the hustle and bustle. I’ll never forget calling the admissions office last May, asking if it was too late to transfer and feeling so grateful and astonished when Bob Neuman remembered who I was, where I was from, what sports I had played in high school. I think that really sums up Gustavus though: they know you from day one and never forget you.
Life at Gustavus
I haven’t quite settled in yet and had a chance to get too involved, but I plan on swimming here and will hopefully join Habitat for Humanity and other service organizations.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Well, so far, I’ve had some great first day lectures! And I’m positive that these will build into meaningful and wonderful academic experiences.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I really love the salad bar and had some excellent lemon poppy seed cake.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
The professors here are really great about making their office hours known and welcoming you to come to them.
What is your dream job?
I would love to decorate cakes like the ones on Ace of Cakes. I think I would also really enjoy planning weddings or other huge events. But realistically speaking, I plan to work with uninsured or underinsured people in the U.S. and provide them with quality dental care because I really feel that everyone deserves access to good health care.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Ignore what everyone is saying and listen to yourself. This is one of the biggest decisions up to this point that you’ve had to make, so don’t worry about picking the wrong school. You honestly learn from everything you do, so don’t feel like you wasted your time if you pick a school that just doesn’t feel right. I think it’s a lot easier to figure out what you don’t want, and once you’ve figured that out, make an adjustment and keep moving forward.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I really enjoy daily chapel. I think it’s wonderful to have time each day to reflect on yourself and your greater purpose while surrounded with people who are on similar missions.
