Life before Gustavus
In high school, I was very academically driven and involved. I was a part of National Honors Society, played varsity tennis for four years, tutored kids in math, and was involved in Key Club as well.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I chose Gustavus because I really felt like I could call it my home for the next four years. I live six hours away so I really felt that comfort was a big factor. Also, my brother graduated in 2006 and I was on campus frequently and really enjoyed the people I met.
Life at Gustavus
I play club tennis here at Gustavus. Our varsity team is phenomenal and we still practice everyday so that is very time consuming. I am also a part of Building Bridges, which is a student-led diversity organization on campus that promotes diversity and focuses on social justice issues in our world.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
My favorite class so far was my First Term Seminar called Cultures of Peace. It was taught by Gregory Mason, who has since retired but was the director of our peace studies program here at Gustavus. It was a great course and really gave me insight into current issues surrounding our world.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I don’t think I can pick just one favorite food because it’s all so good, but I love steak night on Thursdays, orange chicken, and the chicken Caesar salads.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
When I have needed to contact a professor, I have usually emailed them or visited them during office hours. They are extremely helpful resources especially to find out more about a certain major or minor.
What is your dream job?
My ultimate dream job is to be a sports journalist and work for a big sports magazine such as Sports Illustrated or ESPN the Magazine.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
The advice I would give is that when you are on a college campus, try to envision yourself living there for the next four years. College will become your new home and comfort level is a huge factor because you want to enjoy yourself, receive a great education, and make lifelong friends.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I think our traying tradition is a classic, which is when you take a tray from the cafeteria and when it’s cold you go down the College Avenue hill on a tray. It’s so fun!
