Life before Gustavus
In high school I was a varsity tennis player and two year captain. I also played club ultimate Frisbee; our team qualified for nationals because we were the only female ultimate team from the state! I was very active in my church, singing and playing guitar in a worship band. My senior year, a friend I traveled to Germany and France on our own-- it was an adventure!
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I chose Gustavus because of its strong community, incredible facilities and small size. I love that all my professors know my name and that they are easily accessible. I love the incredible school spirit I feel just walking around between classes, attending sports and other events. I also think that Graduating from Gustavus sets you apart because of the incredibly diverse experience the college provides, academically and otherwise.
Life at Gustavus
I am a member of Gustavus Youth Outreach. I played varsity tennis at Gustavus for two and a half years, now I play club and other intramural sports. Even though I don’t play on the team anymore, the GAC tennis team is still my team and tennis is still my passion. I love being a part of such a quality program and getting to see my peers and teammates do some amazing things on (and off!) the court.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Being a religion major, I spend a lot of time in class around a big table discussing ideas with my classmates. This has been my favorite academic experience: getting out of the textbook and discussing our ideas, challenging one another to think deeper, and being treated like intellectual equals with our professors.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I love the breakfast wrap. You need to go on Sunday to do it, because that is the only day when breakfast stays out long enough for the sandwich line to open up as well. You put eggs, cheese and veggies into a wrap and run it through the toaster-- delicious!
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I love visiting my professors during their office hours, even if it’s not about a class topic, we always seem to have something interesting to chat about. Several of them even have times set up to meet in the Courtyard Cafe or the cafeteria once a week just to meet and talk about life with their students.
What is your dream job?
I am planning to go to seminary and become a Lutheran pastor. My studies at Gustavus are helping me academically to get closer to this goal but they have also introduced me to a variety of people and experiences which are helping me to become more well rounded and prepared to work with lots of different types of people.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
For me, choosing a college at some point has to be about how being there makes you feel. After looking at the facts about class size and average GPA prospective Gusties need to decide if GAC feels like home for them. It did for me, and I love it here still!
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
My favorite Gustavus tradition is attending sporting events, whether it’s a football game with thousands of fans or a tennis match with just a few. I love the school spirit and pride I feel watching my fellow Gusties work hard to represent Gustavus and watching other Gusties support them wholeheartedly.
