Life before Gustavus
I was involved in so many activities in high school. I stage-managed and acted in four theatrical productions, was in Concert Choir, National Honor Society, Speech team, German Club and German Honor Society, and involved in numerous activities at my church. The highlight of my high school career was traveling with a group of students to Italy, Greece and Turkey!
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I knew I wanted to attend a smaller, private school somewhere relatively close to home. I looked at a lot of schools like Gustavus - Luther, St. Olaf, Concordia, Augsburg. I loved the liberal arts curriculum and felt really at home when I visited Gustavus. The academic programs, extra-curriculars, and student life were perfect for me, but it was the people that set Gustavus apart from the others!
Life at Gustavus
I’ve done a lot of things at Gustavus! I am the Senate and Faculty beat reporter for the Gustavian Weekly and I absolutely love getting to talk to people! I am also involved with the Gustavus Democrats and had a great time campaigning during the elections. I am also involved in Chi Kappa Chi, Lucia Singers, Student Senate, and Big Partner/Little Partner. This semester, I am studying and interning in Washington, DC through a great program Gustavus works with!
What has been your favorite academic experience?
This fall, I took Political Parties and Elections with Chris Gilbert. One assignment was to follow an election, mine being the Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. We had to predict the election outcomes and then analyze the campaign. This semester, I personally get to interview the winner of that race, Representative Gerry Connolly in Washington, DC!
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Create-your-own pizza bagels or frost-your-own cookies!
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
Gustavus professors are so personable! In addition to meeting at a professor’s house for class, I have been to pancake breakfasts hosted by my professors and have gone out to Buffalo Wild Wings with them! Office hours make it easy to talk to professors about assignments, or you can always call or e-mail them! You would be amazed how many are on Facebook too!
What is your dream job?
Truthfully, I have no idea! When I first came to Gustavus, I had a very specific idea of what I wanted to do with my life. However, Gustavus has opened so many doors for me that now I am considering many different career options. I love politics and communications, so maybe I’ll work in political communications, but who knows!!!
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Call home frequently. Mom and dad love to hear about your successes and failures. You will have a great support system at Gustavus, but your family is invaluable. College can be a roller coaster! There will be times when you are happy, sad, angry, stressed, nervous, excited. And make sure they have your address at school...how else do you expect to get homemade cookies?
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Midnight Express! It’s the perfect break during finals...with free food and great music!
