Life before Gustavus
I was involved in Speech, Knowledge Bowl, Cross Country, Theater, NHS, Target, 4H, and Dollars for Scholars. I love history, and combined with a love of foreign places I consider myself the ultimate history nut. I want to apply to the Smithsonian Museum at some point for an internship, and then go abroad to visit all of my favorite historical sites. I’d consider my most incredible experience to have been when I went to Paris, France and toured it in two days, including the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triumph.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I chose Gustavus because, living only 15 minutes away, I am very familiar with what goes on here. The Nobel Conference was a plus, since I love attending. I also took into consideration the class sizes, the teacher-student involvement, and the fact that there is so much going on here that I was sure to find something to do!
Life at Gustavus
I’m involved in IM soccer, Brass Choir, Trombone Choir, and the Vasa Wind Orchestra. I got involved in soccer because I love soccer as a hobby. I’ve always been in band, and when I learned that there were small ensembles, I had to join since I’m kind of a band nerd. Making sure I’m prepared for class and practicing for band are my main focuses, but I still get a lot of time to hang out with my friends. I think that I’m most interested in the WAC, but I have yet to join since I wanted to get into the hang of college life this year.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
I have two favorite academic experiences so far. One would be going to Mankato with my Geography class to help out in the ELL school they have there. That opened my eyes to how people were living in other parts of the world. My other favorite experience is the eight person classes I have this fall; I love the discussion based setting and how we learn so much more since we talk about what interests us.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
The chocolate and peanut-butter mousse creations are the best ever-I love combining them, and sharing with a friend, to get the Reese’s-mousse taste. The chocolate covered pretzels are also divine.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I have only been to one professor’s house, but I am going to another soon. Also, one professor has invited us to go to Patrick’s (during dinnertime of course) or River Rock to talk. I’m so excited!
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be one of the historians on the History Channel, since I love history and the TV show is the best ever! I think that’s where I’m heading right now, at least the historian part for now.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Prospective Gusties should definitely attend a class or two here, and spending the night in a dorm room really shows you how dorm life is. If you are stressing out, I’d say get a second look. Although you can transfer later, I think it would be tough. If you are afraid, as I was, of making friends, don’t worry! The Gustie Greeters and Orientation Groups are great, as are the CF’s who work hard to bring everyone together.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I like the tradition of painting the rock-it’s always fun to go see what it looks like today! Graffiti Night, for first-years, is also awesome because you get to meet a ton of people in a non-stressful way. Everyone wants to meet you!
