Life before Gustavus
In high school, I enjoyed participating in inter-school Lincoln-Douglas Debate, National Honor Society membership, and acting as a member of the local United Way Youth Council.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
Gustavus was more interested in me than any other college. They were always friendly and willing to help me with my questions. Then they offered even more help with a great financial aid package, which closed the deal!
Life at Gustavus
I spent two years on the Forensics Speech Team. I currently am a member of the Epsilon Pi Alpha Fraternity, a.k.a. the Eppies; the Junior Class representative and Senate Speaker in the Student Senate; a member of Eta Sigma Phi, the Classics Honorary; a Collegiate Fellow; a member of the Campus Judicial Board; a Curriculum II student; and the Secretary-Treasurer of the Order of Omega, the Greek Academic Honor Society. Being a CF takes up most of my time, but Senate is a close second. I enjoy the achievement aspects of Senate most, while I value the social and brotherly elements of being an Eppie.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Curriculum II (CII) is well worth the effort. The intensive, but fun and thoughtful interdisciplinary classes have epitomized the liberal arts education and have taken my understanding of the world to levels much higher than the typical college student’s.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Nothing satisfies me as much as a delicious grilled cheese on wheat bread with tomato soup. I love that the Market Place also offers wheat pasta and sometimes wheat crust pizza as options.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I interact with professors in a friendly manner on a daily basis. We often say Hello and check how each others’ days are going. One professor and I have had a few philosophic discussions outside of class. The professors I’ve gotten to know never hesitate to offer any help they can.
What is your dream job?
Part of me is thinking about work in the government, either in the legislative or judicial branches. However, I may very much enjoy a career in non-profit management as well.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
The answer to your problems may be easier than you think. Know all the facts and information you can and evaluate each school, but trust your gut in the end. I never even visited the Gustavus campus before first-year orientation! Yet, I could not be convinced that there would have been a better choice of college out there for me.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Painting the Rock!
