Life before Gustavus
In high school I was active in many student organizations and have competed in all levels from regional to national. My sophomore year I travelled to Europe to visit Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. My senior year I spent Christmas in Scotland with my pen pal of seven years and his family. I also lettered in golf and volleyball, and was voted most likely to be president.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
When I participated in an overnight visit at Gustavus I felt like I was part of a community, and I wasn’t even enrolled. Speaking with faculty and students I really understood that all the members of this community want to see you succeed and will do everything in their power to help you reach your goals. Studying abroad was also a very important aspect of my college selection, and Gustavus has so many options, it is hard not to study abroad.
Life at Gustavus
I am a member of Pre-Health Club (PHC) which has given me the opportunity to volunteer, hear amazing speakers, and meet some great people. I learned about it the first week at Gustavus at the activity fair, where I signed up and now attend monthly meetings and other events.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
My favorite academic experience so far has been Bio 101 lab. It was my first experience in a lab setting outside of high school. My prof was very outgoing and completely engaged the class in even some of the duller subjects.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
My favorite food in the caf is the multitude of muffin varieties! I love the cappuccino, orange, lemon poppy seed, and all the rest of the muffins.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I have run into my professors in the caf and felt completely comfortable asking a quick question about an assignment or anything. I have been invited to go caroling with profs, and they always encourage me to contact them with any questions or concerns.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be an athletic trainer for a professional European soccer team. Ideally though, I would like to be a physician at a hospital where I’m happy to go to work. Who doesn’t want to be able to say, when all is said and done, I love my job.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
As an admission phoner I speak with many seniors in every stage of the college search process. What helped me was starting early, also taking time to visit, in person, each college. Even though it seems corny, you will “feel” if a college is right for you. You should get a taste of the academics, and the community.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
My favorite Gustavus tradition is Wednesday night movies with my roommate! It is a nice break in the week. We take a study timeout, watch a movie, eat popcorn and catch up with each other.
