Life before Gustavus
Growing up my family hosted 4 different German Exchange students. I enjoyed learning from others that grew up with different opportunities than I had. All of them had better opportunities to travel. I love the outdoors and playing sports. In high school I loved math and my favorite class was Outdoor Adventures.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I choose Gustavus because it had several of the majors that I was considering and it was one of the few schools where I could extend my athletic career. When Coach Schoenebeck had me come for a visit I felt welcome and wanted. I had come to a basketball camp at Gustavus when I was heading into 8th grade and loved it here. Gustavus was close to my Grandparents house as well.
Life at Gustavus
I run Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor Track. I am a member in SAAB and Geo-club. I originally came to Gustavus to play football and run track, but my senior year of high school I broke my shoulder. The summer before arriving at Gustavus I chose to run cross country and have loved it ever since. I spend most of my time running and training since I am in sports year round.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
I started out considering Biology or Chemistry as my major, but found that I enjoyed math more. I continued down that path for a year, but I remembered my First Term Seminar class, Evolution of Hawaii, and thought that I would take another geology class. I found that I really liked Geology. Geology has components of Math, Chemistry, some Biology, and I can learn about how the Earth works.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I like most of the food in the Market Place, but whenever they serve Reuben Soup I have to get it. Chicken Wild Rice soup is another favorite, but I have never been able to turn down Reuben Soup.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I know the Geology professors well. When TA-ing labs conversations can cover broad topics.
What is your dream job?
I would teach junior high students and coach cross country and track.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
In general, I would stress the support system that Gustavus has. Starting with the great Professors. The fact that most majors have tutors. And all their friends that may have taken the class before or are in the class with them.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I would say the Alumni Cross Country meet. It is fun to run against the former runners of Gustavus and the best part is to hear about their experiences at Gustavus after the meet over lunch. Many of the same Alumni then come back during Track for the Alumni Mile at the Drake Alternative Meet.
