Life before Gustavus
In high school I played on my school’s soccer team as well as for a traveling league in the summer. I tried to spend as much time as I could outside. I especially enjoyed going on walks through the woods by my house. I also participated in Relay for Life in the spring, going door to door raising money for the American Cancer Society. One of my proudest moments in high school was my senior year when my school raised $93,000 during Relay for Life. It was amazing to see the community come together and it felt great to be a part of it.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
Before touring Gustavus I had already visited several other colleges. During all of my other visits the people I interacted with always seemed to be in a hurry or just doing their job, but when I toured Gustavus the people seemed genuinely interested in making sure I had a good experience and in making sure Gustavus was a good fit for me. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. It felt like a perfect fit and I’ve never had a second thought.
Life at Gustavus
At Gustavus I am involved in the Big Partner/Little Partner program. The time I spend with my Little Partner is always a good time. I mean, who doesn’t like to color and watch Disney movies, or go sledding and drink hot coco? I also play on the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. The girls on the team are amazing. I joined after I met a few of them while watching one of their tournaments. Also, this Spring I will be going to Pensacola, Florida to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity. I cannot wait.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
I am currently taking Brain and Behavior and I think it is so interesting to learn what controls what function of your body and how if one little part of your brain is changed so many things could go awry. We just started dissecting sheep brains and while it smells terrible I find it fascinating.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I love Wednesdays, I can get grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch. And then they always have Oreo toppings for the soft serve ice cream for dessert. So delicious!
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
The head resident of my dorm has also been one of my political science professors. I’ve had multiple pancake breakfasts in her apartment and chat with her when I see her in the lounge. I also say hi and will stop to chat when I see other professors on campus or down in Saint Peter. They are always friendly and willing to talk.
What is your dream job?
Anything that would allow me to travel! But really I would probably say a child psychologist. I love working with kids.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
The advice I have for prospective Gusties is to not let anyone else make the decision for you. In the end, you will know what college is the best fit for you better than anyone else. For a long time I felt like I should go to the U of MN because that is where my dad went and he really enjoyed it, but deep down I knew it wasn’t the kind of college I wanted to go to. Overall, don’t stress out, college is what you make it.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
One of my favorite Gustavus traditions is Midnight Express. The food is great, and free, and the entertainment is fun. It is a great stress-reliever right before finals. I also really enjoy going traying after a good MN snow storm.
