Life before Gustavus
In high school I loved being involved. I participated in tons of after school activities and took every opportunity in volunteering. During my senior year my family moved to New Brighton while my school was in South Minneapolis, it was hard to wake up at 6 am and spend an hour and half riding the city bus and the train but though I lived far, I was dedicated to go to school everyday and participate in activities. My most important accomplishment was graduating and knowing that I did well throughout my four years in high school.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
Gustavus was my only in state college that I applied to. Though I could’ve chosen out of state colleges, Gustavus was a comfortable environment and I might have wanted to explore by going out of state but I still wanted to be close to home.
Life at Gustavus
Recently I joined Rugby, it might sound crazy and dangerous but I think it is the best sport. Everybody on the team is very supportive and friendly and after a day of practice, I feel extremely satisfied and happy. I am also in group organizations such as ACC and Paso. They are organizations that are supportive for diversity on campus. I became involved with ACC through friends and Paso through a meeting that I attended. Paso is a very organized club and every member is involved in organizing activities for the school. Currently classes take up most of my time because I have five classes on MWF and work during the night. Other than that I mainly try to stay active and healthy. I exercise about everyday and take the opportunity to use the gym as much as I can.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Currently my Psychology class is the most meaningful to me. I was confused and worried that I didn’t have a major but then I stumbled upon Psychology. The study of the mind and human behavior is very interesting. Though I have an interest towards Art, I wasn’t planning much on majoring in it. My psych professor doesn’t mark attendance but I make sure to get to class everyday. Though I have Badminton ten minutes before my Psych class, I always make it a minute before class starts.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I try various foods but deep down I am always afraid to do so. During my first month of my freshman year, I tried every dish in the Market place and though I loved the chicken wings and the wontons, my favorite thus far is the croissant bread with two chicken strips and hot sauce. It is delicious and mouth watering mainly because I love chicken and I love spice. When I am outside of Gustavus I love traditional food. I cook dumplings and it always satisfies me. The soup in the dumpling right after it is made is delicious too.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I see professors all the time outside the class. They are great listeners and awesome advisors. I have a mentor who is an English professor and we meet to have lunch and sometimes chat in the courtyard cafe.
What is your dream job?
If I could do anything or be my dream job it would probably be something that has to do with Art. I love the beauty, the symbolism and the depth in Art. I might not be good enough right now to consider it a major but I could make a living by doing something I love it would be Art for sure.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
I speak from my heart when I say that Gustavus is the right college if you want to belong, if you want to be alone sometimes or if you want to be social, and if you want encouraging professors and to say an opinion in class. I feel liberated here and you will too.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I don’t know whether it is a tradition or not but my favorite one so far was when I was moving in to Gustavus. There were Gusties down the hill waving and welcoming us. It made my move in into Gustavus very comfortable and fun. Everybody was having fun and instead of worrying about the little things like making friends or spending a year in a new environment I felt relaxed and at home.
