Life before Gustavus
While I was growing up I was always in love with the outdoors. I spent my entire life as an active Boy Scout, camping and spending time outside. Several of my favorite memories from my life involve canoeing through the Boundary Waters. My most vivid memory from all of my trips was when my friend and I were paddling ahead of the group and a full grown bull moose swam only fifteen feet in front of us and then climbed ashore. The moose was frighteningly close and breathtakingly beautiful; it was nature at it’s finest.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
When I came to Gustavus on scholarship day, everything just clicked. I had visited a lot of schools, but none of them felt right. When I left Gustavus that day, I knew I would end up a Gustie.
Life at Gustavus
I’m involved in Student Senate and Ultimate Frisbee here. One of my favorite things about this school is how easy it is to get involved in different things. I have a lot of friends from both programs, and it’s especially nice to be in a club sport and have teammates to rely on without the huge commitment of a varsity sport.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
I signed up for a history class called Modern China and that class not only opened up my views on China but also historical perspective in general. That class has helped me to look at current events and every day life in a whole new way.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Nothing beats mac “n” cheese Thursdays in the Market Place. . .except maybe the lamb gyros from the Rotisserie.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
Whenever I see a professor from one of my classes they always stop and say hello. Even professors that I don’t currently have but have had in the past remember my name.
What is your dream job?
I want to design cities and highways. I think it’s really cool how highways in downtown areas flow so seamlessly around each other and want to be involved in planning that someday.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Talk to as many current students as you can. Those phone calls you get from admissions may be awkward, but you can learn an amazing amount from students who are at a school. Do an overnight visit and talk to students then too. Talking to admissions staff and professors is great, but you’re going to be a student at your college so you should talk to the current students.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Well, as we live on a hill in Minnesota, sledding is going to happen. The only problem with this is that not many college students have sleds in their rooms so we take trays from the cafeteria and use those to go down the hill. It’s a ton of fun.
