Life before Gustavus
I gave the commencement speech at my high school graduation. I was also elected editor-in-chief of my high school yearbook (we won third place for Best Yearbook in the state). In high school, I also studied abroad in London.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I have always loved Gustavus. My dad (class of 1981) and older sister (class of 2008) raved about the school my whole life, and so I’ve wanted to go here ever since I could remember. And I have never regretted my decision once!
Life at Gustavus
I am a Peer Assistant, Administrative Director of Student Senate, and I am the secretary of the Comm. Studies Executive Board. I’ve always been involved in co-curricular activities, and so it’s only natural for me to be super involved here. I enjoy the leadership aspect of each of my activities, as well as the fellowship with other Gusties and the insight I’ve gained regarding student organizations in general and the overall structure of Gustavus. Student Senate and the Peer Assistant Program take up a lot of my time (8-10 hours a week). However, I love both organizations and would not give them up for the world. I’m most passionate about leadership at Gustavus. There are so many resources on-campus for one to succeed. I have found that administrators and faculty/staff are incredibly willing to help students achieve, and that’s one part of Gustavus that I treasure.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
I have studied abroad twice in college so far, and those experiences have rewarding beyond measure. There’s only so much one can learn from a textbook, and I’ve learned much about myself and our world through traveling in it. On-campus though, I have found great academia in the Media Criticism course I took last fall, as well as the Human Resource Management course I’m currently taking.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
I love the party potatoes in the caf! Whenever they’re out, my good friend and I load a plate full because they’re so good! I also love ANY dessert the caf offers!
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I interact with professors outside of the classroom quite often. Aside from visiting them during office hours or scheduled appointments, I have had coffee dates with the same professor since freshman year. I enjoy visiting professors both inside and outside of the classroom because I get more of a feel for their personality, and I can get to know them better/they can get to know me better. I also have gained much insight into the academic work we’ve been doing in class by talking to them outside of class.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to work for a non-profit magazine, or perhaps start one myself! I also dream of working for Starbucks Co. in Seattle! How fun would that be!? Regardless, I would love to work in a fast-paced, people-centered environment.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
I was an Admission Overnight Host during my first and second years at Gustavus, and the advice I told the prospective students I hosted was to visit the colleges they were looking at, and talk to the students there various times throughout their college search. I would also ease their anxiety about college by answering their questions honestly, but positively.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
One of my favorite Gustavus traditions is frost-your-owns at various student org events. I also enjoy Mike Domitrz, the Can I Kiss You guy, and other speakers who make regular appearances on campus. I have seen Dancing With the Profs every year so far, and I love that, too!
