Life before Gustavus
High school was a long time ago! I played a lot of sports and hated a lot of classes! I think AP classes and the clay room were likely the most significant academic endeavors of my high school experience. Even though only one of my credits from them transferred to Gustavus! Varsity sports, football, basketball, baseball, captain of football team. I did Relay for Life for the first time, which became an annual ritual.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I fell for Gustavus the first time I visited! I came here on an overnight, and the people, the school, the community; everything was what I was looking for. It was a place for me to play college football, with personal classrooms where a person could really get the most out of their education, a beautiful campus on top of a town that provides what you need and an extension of the college community into off-campus housing, and a recognized and prominent institution to be a part of.
Life at Gustavus
Well, having two majors gives me plenty of reading and writing to do, and this occupies mucho tiempo. I played football here until I was forced into an early retirement by some surgeries, but it was still an excellent and exciting team to be a part of. So now, intramural sports are a blast!
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Modern Philosophy, Buddhist Yoga, and Intro to Neuroscience were great classes. Oh, and Knitting was a great first-year j-term. I would say my favorite thing is how easy it is to talk to professors, and to use them as personal resources.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Southern style fried chicken, 3 meat lasagna, chicken stir fry, steak night. And english muffin pizzas in the toasters.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
Regularly, even if just to say hello, I stop by my professors offices. But it’s also nice to be able to email profs with questions or for help at any time. I have met and hung out with profs in the Courtyard Cafe, at gatherings for my majors, and dinners with guests of the college.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Public schools are big and impersonal, private schools are small and personal. Find a school that you know is worth going to, and then go there and see how you feel. Talk to students, professors, spend an overnight, see the buildings. Go with your gut. Once you’ve decided that, many things will fall into line, sign this form by this date and so on; pretty straightforward. Places like Gustavus will have people that you can call and ask questions, and send personal emails.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Well, I’m not sure if this counts, but I would have to say all of the on-campus home sporting events, but also the Nobel Conference, and midnight express!
