Life before Gustavus
In high school I was involved in my Student Council, Pep Band, Marching Band and Drumline. Outside of school I was a member of my church’s church council and the Fargo-Moorhead Youth Symphony. In 2007, I toured with my band to Ireland and was endowed with the “gift of gab” by kissing the Blarney Stone.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
My mother implored me to at least apply to Concordia, it being her alma matter and more importantly less than a mile from our home. I guess I rebelled and applied only to schools that were more than 250 miles away. I first toured Gustavus in the spring and absolutely fell in love with the physical setting. I applied and also received the Bjorling Music Scholarship which then tipped the scales and I immediately sent in my deposit.
Life at Gustavus
As a CII student, I spend the majority of my time reading. I have found my little nook to be a corner in the third level of the library. I am also taking private lessons and a member of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. I love to spend afternoons in the caf with some coffee and tasty pastries while reading the paper or talking to friends with the afternoon sun shining in. The caf is especially beautiful around 2 or 3.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
As a first-year, I have experienced a wider range of classes and been to more places than I would have ever thought during my first year at Gustavus. I have been to the Walker Art Museum and seen the spoon and cherry trademark of Minnesota during a CII retreat, attended a rare performance of Bernstein’s Mass as a part of GWO, and actually got to play videogames as part of my J-term.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Impossible to answer! I think the bakery is the best part of the Marketplace. It bakes so many new kinds of bars, cakes, pies, crumbles, and the frequent unknown, sugary, energy-restoring, piece of goodness that my mouth is salivating right now as I think about it.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
Professors are always glad to meet during their office hours and even not during their office hours! More often they will recognize me in the hallway and say my name and I will back to them.
What is your dream job?
Hmm...possibly located in Washington D.C? I love being at the heart of change and I think if there was a job that provided me housing... like a big house, with lots of rooms, and I actually worked from there...and it was a solid color, I’m thinking white...that would be awesome.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Visit the college and after the tour with the tour guide, tour on your own! Visit the classes, talk to current students, or attend campus events. Essentially, try to see what your life would be like if you truly went to the college.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Christmas in Christ Chapel is a very moving experience. Traying down the hill with friends is also fun afterwards.
