Life before Gustavus
I was heavily involved in choir during my high school years. I was in many ensembles including the Hastings Vocal Jazz and the Riverside Company show choir. During my senior year of high school, I was able to sing a solo at a St. Olaf concert and perform on a cruise ship in Hawaii.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I chose Gustavus because of its inviting atmosphere and the excellent nursing program that it has. Gustavus offers great support to its students.
Life at Gustavus
Other than my academic life, my time at Gustavus is spent singing in the Gustavus Choir, or being a Collegiate Fellow. Being in the Gustavus Choir allows me to relax and forget about academia for a while. It is also extremely fun and the tours are amazing. My role as a Collegiate Fellow is very important and I care about it deeply. A Collegiate Fellow is important to the environment of this campus and have a large responsibility to their work and their personal life. Being a CF allows me to connect to students who I would seldom see or interact with. It involves programming for residents and other responsibilities. The experience, and lessons, gained from the job are priceless.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
My First Term Seminar was what every FTS course should be. My course with Joyce Sutphen was tremendous and allowed me to transition into college academia life quickly. It was a warm-welcoming class and I would recommend it to any incoming first-year student.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
You can never go wrong with a sandwich from the deli section of the Market Place, especially if you’re sick of hamburger and pizza. Thursday morning omelets are amazing as well, granted that you may not be able to move very well afterwards. I enjoy an “everything” omelet.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
Professors at Gustavus are very inviting. My First Term Seminar teacher took our class to Godfather’s Pizza to catch up during the second semester. Almost everyone was able to attend. It was great seeing how much she cared for us by taking time to take us all out when we were no longer in any of her courses.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to become a nurse practitioner. It’s why I chose Gustavus, and it’s what I plan to do. I am extremely excited about starting the nursing program here at Gustavus and am determined to do well.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
I would suggest that prospective Gusties visit a couple of times during the year. It would make their decisions easier if they visited on days that were not special occasions to get a true sense of the college. An overnight stay would also be helpful as well. For those who are struggling with the process, they should just try and picture themselves attending Gustavus compared to any other school. Also, students should give all schools a shot, including Gustavus even though they believe that they’ve applied to too many schools. It might be that you haven’t found the right school if you’ve applied to fifteen colleges and still don’t have a sense of where you want to go.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Christmas in Christ Chapel is easily my favorite tradition, and Gustavus’ greatest tradition. The concert means a lot to the singers, conductors, faculty, alumni and family who attend each year. Singing “O Come All Ye Faithful” is a great way to start the holiday season, and I can’t imagine mine starting without it.
