Life before Gustavus
I loved speech in high school; medaled in it four times at state, including a championship and two seconds. I worked at a coffee shop for 3 years and waited tables during the summer to keep the tourists happy and miss it dearly. My senior year, I went to Spain to experience the culture and European lifestyle.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
Gustavus is prone to extroverts and that’s what I loved about it. The atmosphere was so loud and exciting that I couldn’t turn it down. Also, I could see myself being involved with the St Peter community more so than any other private institution I looked at on my collegiate search.
Life at Gustavus
I am a member of Queers and Allies and the ILS program at Gustavus. I have always loved being a part of both of them because it gives me a chance to interact with everyone who possesses the same mind set that I do. Also, I was involved with Study Buddies and liked that it gave me an opportunity to interact with the community around the college I love. Also, I work at River Rock which allows me to meet many more Gusties and community members.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
My freshman year, I took Intro to Christian Thought with Deborah Goodwin. It was the most memorable course because it was a course that I really had no interest in taking, but used it to fill a general requirement. 100% of my ability to attend the class at 9:00 in the morning was Deborah Goodwin. She had such passion and enthusiasm for her students and lectures that it made the class a joy to attend.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Bosco Stix. The worst possible thing you could ever eat every other Tuesday, but it is far and above my favorite treat.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
I often utilize office hours to do any chatting with my professors. Also, working at River Rock, I see a lot of them in an out throughout the week, hammering away at classwork or just hanging out with their families. It’s always more fun to see them outside of their element and in reality.
What is your dream job?
If I could do anything in the world, I would like to be the Editor at Large for Vanity Fair. It’s such an important editorial that it would be a dream come true to have the layout and content of each page at my fingertips.
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Make sure you choose the right school for you. It’s important to listen to your family and your teachers and your friends, but, at the end of the day, the decision is all yours. If you can sit down in the arb, look around and think ‘this is it. This is me,” then you’ve picked the right college. Also, it’s not about being anxious, it’s about being excited! When you’re anxious, you lose sight about what really matters: the college experience.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
By far, my favorite activity on campus is people watching in the caf. There is no limit to the absolute craziness, emotional outburst, and hilarity that you can witness by sitting down with some friends, and watching your fellow Gusties.
