Life before Gustavus
My major interests, outside of academics, were athletics. I was a three sport athlete throughout high school for cross country, swimming, and track. I served as cross country captain for 3 years and swimming captain my senior year. I was invloved in National Honor Society and was secretary my senior year. I also aided in freshman orientation. My most incredible experience in high school was my freshman German trip. I spent a week with a host family in a town named Wurzburg, and a second week was spent in the Italian Alps skiing. This trip introduced me to another passion of mine, downhill skiing.
Why did you choose Gustavus?
I chose Gustavus for a multitude of reasons. First, a large number of my relatives have attended the college. This includes my mother, father, and brother. Having vast exposure to the campus and the people it attracted me to the campus. Second, Gustavus has strength in the sciences. Having an interest in chemistry, I know that the programs here will provide me with a great basis of knowledge that will guide me, hopefully, to graduate study.
Life at Gustavus
My main extra-curriculars are athletics here at Gustavus. I am a three sport athlete in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. I enjoy being part of a team of individuals who all share very similar interests. Among runners, I have found a very similar mentality which defines me well. It’s the Work Hard, Play Hard mentality. Although I love the running, academics is the activity that takes most of my time. I am very passionate about running, but my biggest reason for being here is academics and I would say I'm the most passionate about my studies.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
My freshman seminar was Leisure Studies. In this class, I was able to build one of the Adirondack chairs seen around campus. This provided me with the opportunity to give a little something back to the campus. They were quite fun to build as well.
What is your favorite food in the Market Place?
Spicy Chicken Curry, I’ve tried to duplicate the recipe, but have never gotten it quite right.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
My instances of interaction with professors outside the classroom would be mainly visiting during office hours. In the next two years, much more interaction will be formed through performing research in the chemistry department.
What is your dream job?
I would be a ski instructor, I figure I could do downhill skiing in the winter and water skiing in the summer months. I happen to enjoy both immensely
What advice would you give a prospective Gustie?
Although it’s difficult to always find, go based upon how you feel. Try to find something that interests you and pursue it. Ignore all different factors in you life, and concentrate on your needs. Finally, that the road will eventually present itself. It just takes time.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
Traying in the winter, if the conditions are right
