Tell us about life before Gustavus
Was there life before Gustavus? I can hardly remember. I grew up in a small town outside of Eau Claire, Wisconsin on a hobby farm. I spent virtually all of my time outside, which ultimately lead me to Gustavus because I was interested in the Environmental Studies program.
What are your professional/research interests and significant professional projects or accomplishments?
I am interested in greenhouse management, ex and in situ conservation of rare plants, and experiential based education. Interpretive exhibits for the Melva Lind Interpretive Center.
What do you learn from teaching students?
I learn just how much difference a single person can make. There are so many amazing people on campus with such interesting passions and it is ultimately following these passions that allows a single person to change the world in their own small way.
What do you value most about teaching at Gustavus?
I value the Gustavus community the most. I have felt a part of the larger whole ever since I first came to campus my freshman year. There's always someone you can go to if you need help professionally, personally, and recreationally and everyone is interested in seeing you succeed.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy gardening, music, photography, and travel. My next travel destination is Madagascar for the amazing biodiversity.
Describe a community service project you've worked on with students or about your own community service or community involvement (on campus or in the larger community).
As a student I volunteered with adopt-a-grandparent and as a youth director at a local church. I now attend Hilltop United Methodist Church in Mankato.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition or one aspect of the community that you like to highlight when describing Gustavus to others?
My favorite Gustavus tradition is traying down the Old Main hill after the first snow.
