Q:
What health services are readily available on campus?
-
A:
The Student Health Service is located on the lower level of the Campus Center and is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, while school is in session (closed breaks/holidays, June-August).
Two board-certified nurse practitioners, two licensed practical nurses, and an administrative secretary/billing specialist staff the Student Health Service. A registered dietitian is available for consultation and appointments.
While the Health Service staff can write prescriptions and perform many tests, they cannot administer allergy shots or perform x-rays. St. Peter clinics and the town's new hospital are also easily accessible.
The Health Service Nurse Practitioners are licensed to write prescriptions, which may be filled at a pharmacy in the area. There is no pharmacy on campus, however, there are two located in St. Peter.
All Gustavus Student Health Service office visits with the Nurse Practitioners, laboratory tests, immunizations, and/or medical supplies will be billed to the student’s medical insurance company. Any laboratory or immunization fees not paid by insurance may be charged to the student account. These services are provided at a reasonable cost. Each student is required to carry a current insurance card to present to Health Service at the time of office visit.
During evenings and weekends, Urgent Care at the St. Peter Hospital is available for injuries or illnesses that must be seen immediately. The hours for Urgent Care are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends and holidays. The Emergency Room at the St. Peter Hospital is available 24 hours a day and should be reserved for true emergencies.
