Life before Gustavus
A small-town girl at heart, I was born and raised in Ventura, Iowa. During my undergraduate years at Buena Vista, I took full advantage of the flexibility a liberal arts education offers, bouncing around from major to major as different things caught my interest. When they handed me my degree, I still wasn't sure what to do with my life, so I took the opportunity to work in the admission office for a year. I then enrolled in graduate courses at the
What are your professional/work interests?
The thing I enjoy most about my job is meeting personally with students and families in high schools and during campus visits. I enjoy helping students to discover how their interests and abilities match up with what Gustavus has to offer. The best part is when you spend months working with a student who ends up enrolling at GA. You get to really follow that person for four more years and watch as he or she becomes a wonderful addition to the Gustavus community.
What is your favorite college search tip?
At first glance, many colleges appear very similar. While it is important to ask about academic departments and extracurricular activities, remember that you are searching for a college that will fit you even if your interests change over the next four years. Take it from someone who dabbled in a variety of academic areas - the overall attributes of a particular college are much more important than specific departments! Taking notes on what you have seen and heard during your campus visits will assist you in selecting the one that best meets your needs.
What are your most recent professional/work projects?
This has been a busy time of the year for me! I just recently wrapped up my high school visits for the fall, and have been buried in application files ever since. I have read some fantastic essays, and continue to be impressed with the talented students who are considering attending Gustavus. I have also been taking Spanish classes here on campus, and I'm getting ready for my semester final exam.
What do you learn from interacting with Gustavus students?
Gustavus students are all about balance... It's impressive to watch them consistently juggle a challenging academic schedule with various extracurricular interests. I admire their passion for and commitment to the things in which they are involved. As I mentioned earlier, it's so rewarding to watch students that I helped through the college search process making their mark here at GA.
What do you value most about working at Gustavus?
I value the opportunity to represent the college to students and families, because I believe wholeheartedly that this is an excellent place for a student to live, learn and grow. I really value working at a place that gives me a lot of freedom in how I do my job. Finally, I love the opportunity to attend sporting events, concerts, recitals, plays, and other performances by current Gusties.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy almost anything outdoors... Hiking, backpacking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, and climbing are a few favorites. I love cooking and baking for friends and family. I play the guitar and sing off key. I am also much more likely to grab a book than turn on the television... although I will admit to a weakness for college football games, the National Geographic channel, and the Food Network.
How have you been involved in your community?
At Gustavus, I have been a mentor in the Drug & Alcohol Education program, a mentor in the Diversity Center, and an orientation facilitator. I have also volunteered my time with the St Peter Humane Society. I really enjoy what the city of St. Peter offers. I love relaxingwith coffee and friends at the River Rock, shopping for fresh fruits & veggies at the Co-Op, and attending events like the Rock Bend Folk Festival.
What is your favorite Gustavus tradition?
I think Gustavus runs a top-notch orientation program. There are so many fun events for students and great opportunities to connect with friends and mentors. It really helps students with the transition to college.
